Cucumbers are best planted in soil that has been fertilized prior to this seasons planting, that is rich in nutrients. Cucumbers can be harvested pretty much whenever you want, at any size.

4-Lettuce

Lettuce is something that everyone should consider growing again because of its ease but also because of how many vitamins and minerals they provide.

Lettuce is packed with Vitamins A, B, C, and K giving almost a complete profile of all the Vitamins we need from our diet. If you think or know that you are deficient when it comes to your vitamins, you should definitely consider growing lettuce.

Lettuce is best planted in cooler weather, so aim for early to mid spring planting. Lettuce can be grown outside through the fall in most climates making it a crop we can harvest multiple times.

5-Green Beans

Green beans are a food many people associate with summer for their vibrant green color and distinctive snapping noise they make when you bite in to them. Green beans are a very healthy food as well rich in Vitamins A, C and K as well as potassium, iron and manganese as well.

Green beans are an all around balanced food packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber to help you maintain good overall health.

Green beans are best planted in soil that has good drainage, and in a south facing garden with plenty of full sunlight. Beans are a plant that needs to be sown or replanted every few weeks in order for you to be able to harvest them throughout the summer season.

6-Basil

Basil is such an easy herb to grow, and can be done in either the ground or in a pot for your convenience. Basil has that very distinctive smell associated with many summer dishes. Add basil to your pasta or you can blend up a bunch to make pesto sauce yourself.

It seems that everyone is concerned about their heart health today, however that doesn’t change the fact that 1 in 3 adults in the United States are affected by heart disease.

Even though this is such a high rate of heart disease there is good news, there are a wide variety of things that you can do and habits you can change which can help you to turn things around.

Here Is a List of Things You Want to Avoid When Concerned with Your Heart Health

1-Sitting Down for Extended Periods of Time

Whether it be at the movies, at work or at home watching TV, we spend too much time sitting down. Sitting down is bad for our circulatory system because our blood is just pooling in our lower extremities and remaining there.

Having the blood pool in our lower extremities puts us at risk for serious issues like deep vein thrombosis, where a blood clot forms in the deep veins in your body usually in the legs.

If you develop a blood clot the only way to go about getting rid of it is through medication, in worst case scenarios the patient may even need surgery.

Avoid putting yourself at risk for deep vein thrombosis by doing a few simple things. First take the opportunity to walk around and stretch at work whenever possible.

We spend the most time at work and many of us work in an office that requires us to sit at a desk. Stand up and work whenever possible. It may sound sill but it will make a difference. Next call you have to take, take it standing up. If you have a cordless phone or do business on your cell, take a walk while on the phone.

2-If You Snore Get it Checked Out

The only concern most people have when it comes to their snoring is having to listen to their spouse complain about how they were up all night because of it. The problem is that there may be a more serious underlying issue that is causing the snoring.

If you know that you are snoring, don’t ignore it get it checked out. Many people suffer from a disorder called obstructive sleep apnea without even knowing it.

This is where your body periodically stops breathing during the course of sleep which causes your blood pressure to go through the roof and puts you at increased risk for heart attacks, strokes and heart disease.

If you aren’t sure if you are snoring, one of the most tell tale signs is just feeling completely drained of energy. If you are feeling very fatigues yet get a full night sleep and don’t know of any other reason why you would be so tired, sleep apnea may be the issue.

3-Stop Going Too Hard at the Gym

A big problem for many people in their 40s and 50s is that they hurt themselves by having too intense of a routine or are just lifting too much in general.

This is a common problem for people who used to regularly exercise but haven’t done so since they were younger. This is the person who only goes to the gym every once in awhile, maybe once a week and goes all out in the process.

You can’t squeeze an entire weekly weightlifting routine in to one session no matter who you are or what your fitness level is.

4-Don’t Drink Excessively

When it comes to heart health and even our overall health, the science on alcohol seems to always be in conflict. Some studies say that you should avoid alcohol altogether while others say that having some is actually beneficial to the heart.

Whether or not your drink is heart healthy depends on the drink itself. Red wines in particular have a high concentration of antioxidants which fight free radicals and are beneficial to our health. On the other hand, drinking beer in excess isn’t going to do you any good except to pack on extra pounds which is going to do more harm than good.

If you’re going to drink alcohol, just do so in moderation. Stick to 1-2 drinks a day maximum to keep your heart as healthy as possible.

Getting started when it comes weight lifting is difficult, but once you are over the initial hump getting complacent can be easy. Many people continue to do the same exercises over and over again, yet wonder why they aren’t seeing progress.

If you want to take it to the next level, you are going to have to change up your routine, it is that simple. This means not only incorporating new exercises in to your routine, but also kicking up the intensity a notch as well.

Here is some essential advice that every weightlifter who wants to keep progressing needs to know:

New Takes On Old Exercises

The easiest way to see progress when it comes to your routine is to include some variation in to the old familiar exercises you usually do.  Beginners are just looking to get the basic movement patterns down so that they can get a start on building muscle and strength.

As you progress further, you need to incorporate new equipment and techniques in to your routine to work the same muscle groups you’re used to working, just differently.

One important simple tool that every advanced fitness fanatic needs to know how to use is the dumbbell. Most everyone has used this piece of equipment but are unaware of how versatile it can be.

For example, the first exercise that comes to mind when most people think of the dumbbell are dumbbell curls. This is an exercise where you hold the weight with your palms facing outward, and you curl the weight upwards pivoting at the elbow.

This exercise is great for working the bicep but focuses more on the inner head than the outside head of the biceps. You can easily change this in to a new exercise by simply rotating your wrist 90 degrees to where the dumbbells are perpendicular to the floor.

The new exercise commonly referred to as hammer curls, works the outside head more and will help you to achieve that bigger more developed bicep everyone wants to have.

Dumbbells are a great alternative to both machines and the straight bar for other reasons as well. Machines control your range of motion not working the muscle to the full potential. Using straight bars usually leads to one arm or shoulder being stronger than the other due to favoritism of the dominant arm.

If you go to a gym, the next time you are looking to use a machine or piece of a equipment and it is occupied use the opportunity to try a new exercise or variation.

Learning new exercises and variations can help you eliminate all that downtime you have between exercises when you are just waiting to use a machines.

Isolate Each Muscle Group and Focus on One or Two Daily

Another good strategy to employ when it comes to increasing your results is to focus on one muscle group per day, but keep the duration of the exercise the same. What we mean by that is instead of doing say 2 chest exercises and 2 leg exercises for your routine, you should do 4 chest exercises instead.

Hit one muscle group extremely hard, yet only do so once a week instead of probably every other day like you did when you first started out.

If your chest exercise routine consisted of flat bench and flys, make sure to vary it up if you want to progress to the next level.  The next time it is chest day try doing incline bench press, decline bench press, weighted pushups and bent over flys to switch things up.

When you really get the hang of things you can really start to maximize your efficiency when it comes to gains and time as well by incorporating combination exercises in to your routine.

This allows you to hit each muscle group twice a week which means more time spent on each group with less overall time spent at the gym.

The Number One Thing to Keep in Mind When it Comes to Gains-Challenge Yourself

The main idea here is to always keep challenging yourself. Your body is designed to adapt to change over time so exercises should become easier over time, it is a sign of your body becoming more efficient.

You need to change up your routine once you feel that you are becoming acclimated to the exercise. Keep challenging your body and you will continue to see change.

If you have ever been serious about weight loss or fitness goals you are probably sick of even looking at chicken.

Grilled chicken breast is a staple of many meals when it comes to the best nutrition because of the extremely high amount of protein you get versus fat, at a 20:1 ratio.  This is about as best as it gets when it comes to lean proteins.

Thankfully grilled chicken tastes great, but that doesn’t mean that you are going to want to eat it exclusively day in and day out. Some variation in the diet is not only good for our taste buds, but it is good for our mental well being as well.

Here are a few lean meat alternatives when it comes to maintaining a healthy and balanced diet.

Quail

Quails have slightly more protein per serving than your typical serving of chicken, but comes along with a couple extra grams of fat which in the grand scheme of things is nothing to worry about.

Quails are small game birds which have both fast twitch or light meat, and slow twitch or dark meat similar to chickens. Quails can be used in a large variety of dishes and can be dressed more lightly than chickens as well due to their more intense flavor.

Quail eggs are great as well if you are looking for an alternative to your typical chicken egg. Quail eggs are smaller than chicken eggs, and will need 2-3 quail eggs to equal one of your average chicken egg.

Pork Loin

Pork Loin is another great lean meat, coming in at about 23 grams of protein and only 2 grams of fat in a 3 ounce serving. That is only one more gram of fat than chicken, and 3 more grams of protein in the same serving size, so pork holds up pretty well.

Pork is also loaded with B Vitamins which help us to metabolize and convert food. Eating more food rich in B vitamins can help boost metabolism and in turn help you to lose weight more quickly.

Pheasant

Pheasants are another good choice because although they aren’t chickens, they taste very similar to chickens. So if you aren’t that willing to try something that foreign to you, pheasant is the best choice.  It doesn’t taste as gamey as other birds on this list.

Pheasants have the same amount of protein as chicken per serving at 20 grams, but has slightly more fat at 3 grams versus the 1 gram in chicken. If you only eat the breast meat of the pheasant you can reduce that down to 1 gram of fat per serving, identical to the chicken.

Another great positive when it comes to Pheasants is that you don’t have to go out and hunt them. Normally when you compare farmed meat to wild meat, wild meat has a better nutrient profile and is generally a better choice than farmed.

This isn’t the case with Pheasants however, so feel free to pick some up at your local butcher. Remember when cooking your Pheasant to do so shortly because they can become easily dry due to their lean content.

Duck

If you are the one who is always grabbing for the Turkey leg at Thanksgiving dinner, you will love Duck.  Duck meat tastes similarly to the dark meat on turkey which is delicious.

Ducks have a reputation for being a fatty bird, which is true to an extent. If you plan on leaving the skin on your duck then yes it probably isn’t a good choice when it comes to lean meats. However, without the skin, duck only has 4 grams of fat per serving which really isn’t all that bad.

The only downside to duck is that you have to know how to cook it properly otherwise it can taste gross and oily.

You have to make sure to perforate the skin with a fork or something similar to allow the excess fat to drain out of the meat. If you don’t do this, you allow the duck to marinate in its own fat which makes for a more oily, fatty piece of meat.
