It seems that everyone is concerned about their heart health today, however that doesn’t change the fact that 1 in 3 adults in the United States are affected by heart disease.
Even though this is such a high rate of heart disease there is good news, there are a wide variety of things that you can do and habits you can change which can help you to turn things around.
Here Is a List of Things You Want to Avoid When Concerned with Your Heart Health
1-Sitting Down for Extended Periods of Time
Whether it be at the movies, at work or at home watching TV, we spend too much time sitting down. Sitting down is bad for our circulatory system because our blood is just pooling in our lower extremities and remaining there.
Having the blood pool in our lower extremities puts us at risk for serious issues like deep vein thrombosis, where a blood clot forms in the deep veins in your body usually in the legs.
If you develop a blood clot the only way to go about getting rid of it is through medication, in worst case scenarios the patient may even need surgery.
Avoid putting yourself at risk for deep vein thrombosis by doing a few simple things. First take the opportunity to walk around and stretch at work whenever possible.
We spend the most time at work and many of us work in an office that requires us to sit at a desk. Stand up and work whenever possible. It may sound sill but it will make a difference. Next call you have to take, take it standing up. If you have a cordless phone or do business on your cell, take a walk while on the phone.
2-If You Snore Get it Checked Out
The only concern most people have when it comes to their snoring is having to listen to their spouse complain about how they were up all night because of it. The problem is that there may be a more serious underlying issue that is causing the snoring.
If you know that you are snoring, don’t ignore it get it checked out. Many people suffer from a disorder called obstructive sleep apnea without even knowing it.
This is where your body periodically stops breathing during the course of sleep which causes your blood pressure to go through the roof and puts you at increased risk for heart attacks, strokes and heart disease.
If you aren’t sure if you are snoring, one of the most tell tale signs is just feeling completely drained of energy. If you are feeling very fatigues yet get a full night sleep and don’t know of any other reason why you would be so tired, sleep apnea may be the issue.
3-Stop Going Too Hard at the Gym
A big problem for many people in their 40s and 50s is that they hurt themselves by having too intense of a routine or are just lifting too much in general.
This is a common problem for people who used to regularly exercise but haven’t done so since they were younger. This is the person who only goes to the gym every once in awhile, maybe once a week and goes all out in the process.
You can’t squeeze an entire weekly weightlifting routine in to one session no matter who you are or what your fitness level is.
4-Don’t Drink Excessively
When it comes to heart health and even our overall health, the science on alcohol seems to always be in conflict. Some studies say that you should avoid alcohol altogether while others say that having some is actually beneficial to the heart.
Whether or not your drink is heart healthy depends on the drink itself. Red wines in particular have a high concentration of antioxidants which fight free radicals and are beneficial to our health. On the other hand, drinking beer in excess isn’t going to do you any good except to pack on extra pounds which is going to do more harm than good.
If you’re going to drink alcohol, just do so in moderation. Stick to 1-2 drinks a day maximum to keep your heart as healthy as possible.
