Physical activity comes with some inherent risks. That’s why we warm-up before we exercise. It’s why we stretch before a run. Why we warm up before lifting weights. Why we make sure to cool down after too. We need to prevent injury. And empirical data supports that, what is in my opinion, the best kind of physical activity — sex — causes just as many injuries as physical workouts. In fact, 6 out of every 10 people has suffered a sex-related injury.

That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Sex IS a workout. It’s solid cardio with a rapidly increased heart rate. Like yoga, you contort your body into weird shapes and angles. You’re basically wrestling with another human being. And it’s actually the most vanilla of all sexual positions — missionary — that causes the most injuries.

A plurality of those injuries, for men, was related to the penis, while a majority of women report injuries to the vagina during missionary sex. This likely has little to do, statistically, with the activity, angle or anything else inherent with the position, but rather it’s likely because of the popularity of the position and how often people are in it during sex.

Of course the penis isn’t the only body part at risk to injury during missionary sex.

The next most common injury that men reported was to their backs. This is a repetitive movement and stress-related injury that shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise if you put some though into it. Notably, men experienced more joint injuries when performing sex doggy-style — with reports of injuries to elbows, shoulders, and knees.

And a majority of men reported that the injuries ended up sending them to seek medical treatment some time later, including seeing a specialist.

If something like this happens to you, it’s important that you be completely honest and truthful with your doctor about what happened. You probably don’t need to give them all of the gory details of how you ended up having that injury, but you do have to provide them at least the base, foundational idea of the actions that led to your sex-related injury.

If they need further details, they’ll ask. But be forward with the info. Even the best diagnostician can’t figure out what is wrong with you just by looking at you. And lying about the source of the injury will only cloud things and keep them from — potentially — being able to actually properly help you.

Doctors know how common injuries like this are.

Furthermore, they’ve likely already seen and heard things far worse than you could possibly share with them. And if you’re really worried about sharing, comfortably, details of your sexual exploits, know that there are laws in this country that will protect your privacy.

Doctors know all of the code words and phrases for sex-related injuries and can usually tell when you’re not being totally truthful about some injury that you’ve suffered. They know what a fall in the shower looks like. They’ve seen plenty of those. They know it doesn’t look like that hip strain from that recent tussle in the sheets with your partner.

So, what should you do about any of this?

What can you do to prevent embarrassing injuries that could send you to the doctor having to explain your recent sexual exploits to a nurse or specialist? Well, I doubt you want to break out the full calisthenics before getting it on. That could totally ruin the mood that you’re putting some effort into trying to set. Doing back bends and touching your toes are not necessarily the sexiest moves to be pulling off right before you’re about to get into bed with your partner. You should be focused on pre-gaming for the big event, warming things up sexually to make sure you’re ready to go, and getting her into the right frame of mind.

Make sure that you’re staying limber and building core strength to support yourself. And, as with any injury that could occur at the gym or with any physical activity, you should limit yourself to what you’re capable of. When you’re at the gym, you know when to push yourself to see some gains, but you know not to go too far. You’ll hurt something or, at least, suffer some set back that will sideline you for enough time as to put a dent in any gains that you’ve seen. This goes for sex too.

With sex, we’re not as regimented about the physical activity that is inherent in the act of sex. We will push and stretch beyond our physical limitations because we’ve been told that it feels good. You’re adventurous and exploring new things, but failing to take into account that you’re still bound by your own body and what it can and cannot do.

If you make sure to keep in mind that this is a physical activity with all of the same risks associated with sports and exercise that bear a striking resemblance to it when you really think about it, you’ll save yourself a lot of pain and aggravation later. Hey — you’ll even save yourself, potentially, some serious cash considering the cost of medical bills and the potential hit to your insurance bill if it ends up being a chronic condition.

If you keep in mind that sex is a physical activity with all of the same inherent risks as any other exercise that includes cardio, stretching, contorting your body into different shapes and basically what can look like ancient Greco-Roman wrestling, then you’ll be a lot safer. And you’ll already be several steps ahead of that guy in the ER right now who “slipped in his shower and fell on a shampoo bottle.” Every doctor has heard that one. So, don’t be that guy.

 

In the dictionary definition of pornography, two elements are present. First, there is erotic behavior depicted, regardless of whether it’s in words or graphics. Secondly, the purpose is to cause sexual excitement. That may be the purpose of porn but even up to now that we’re already in the age of digital technology and no longer in the Victorian era, the debate about watching pornography still goes on.

 

Or rather, especially now that we’re in the digital technology age. Because there’s internet pornography now. And experts are saying that it’s an addiction, much like alcohol or substance abuse is an addiction. So, how is watching pornography an addiction?

According to scientific studies, watching porn triggers your brain to activate feelings of reward and pleasure, which should be healthy. However, when you watch too much internet porn and you do it all the time, your brain gets rewired – your brain may react to the pornographic material the same way as drug addicts do when shown pictures of cocaine or heroin. And this is when things get really problematic.

There are many arguments for and against porn, but to say that watching internet pornography is an addiction is a novel thing. Let’s take a look at what a 2015 study has to say about the matter.

 

Behaviors are also addictions.

The old school view of addiction was focused merely on substance abuse. As of 2011, however, the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) has revised its definition of addiction. According to the organization, addiction is a disease characterized by an individual’s pursuit of the feeling of reward and/or relief by using substances or manifesting certain behaviors – such as watching internet pornography. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) may also move in the same direction, with a sub-chapter created in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) for addiction disorders that are non-substance related.

This then creates a map in the brain for sexual excitement.

Unfortunately, because the brain map for sexual excitement created when an individual regularly watches internet porn are more consistently reinforced, the brain maps for natural sexual stimulation pale in comparison. This means that if you watch internet porn more regularly than you engage in physical sex with a partner, your brain gets trained to feel more rewarded with porn than with actual sex. This is the part that can cause a lot of trouble later on, like when a physical partner can no longer sexually excite you because your brain is looking for porn stimulation instead.

One neuroimaging study showed that in people with compulsive sexual behaviors, watching internet pornography triggered the same regions in the brain that are also activated when substance addicted individuals are shown drugs or alcohol. Their conclusion was that the neural networks for pathological use of substances and pathological consumption of natural rewards, such as the pleasure derived from sex or watching internet pornography, may actually overlap. This bolsters the argument that watching internet pornography can be an addictive behavior.

 

The more you watch porn, the more it excites you.

In a study involving men who were shown visual sexual stimulation, as in porn, it was revealed that those who watched porn for two or more hours per week felt more sexually aroused while watching porn. The researchers even went so far as to suggest that watching visual sexual stimuli may be able to improve erectile functioning because it could prime the brain for sexual thoughts, which, in turn, could eventually lead to better sexual response.

 

Still pictures don’t work anymore.

People who watch internet pornography more and for longer or who may be considered as internet pornography addicts are less sexually aroused by still sexual images. Those who consume a lot of internet pornography may already be desensitized to less explicit graphics and are instead looking for more explicit sex videos. Researchers suggest that this could become a tool for identifying internet pornography addiction. If you no longer feel sexually excited just by looking at a sexually explicit photograph, or if you feel that it’s no longer enough to arouse you, you may be at risk of being an internet porn addict.

This is not necessarily a symptom of erectile dysfunction, but more of a psychological or neural problem. However, if it’s already causing distress and relationship problems, it would be wise to seek expert help to prevent it from becoming a full-blown sexual dysfunction later on.

 

Excessive consumption of internet pornography is associated with hypersexuality.

The condition is sometimes called sexual addiction or hypersexuality disorder and is characterized by being excessively preoccupied with anything to do with sex, such as fantasies, urges, or behaviors, so much so that it already causes distress, is no longer controllable, and already has negative impacts to aspects of your daily life. Unfortunately, in a study on hypersexuality, it was found that more than 80% of hypersexual individuals watch internet porn excessively.

Watching pornographic materials elicit both positive and negative outcomes. However, as with anything else, too much of something not always good, and the same goes true for watching internet pornography excessively.

Unfortunately, the positive effects of porn watching are not often studied by researchers, so the negative effects of pornography are often the ones being highlighted, which adds to the negative reputation of porn. This doesn’t mean that you should stop watching porn now. But just to be on the safe side, just make sure you do it in moderation.

 

It may be unimaginable for most men, but there is actually a medical condition called spermatorrhea where a man spontaneously and uncontrollably ejaculates. And here’s the kicker – it happens without any sexual activity or stimulation.

Nineteenth-century treatments included enforced chastity and, in worst case scenarios, castration. Herbal Treatments.

Both in traditional Chinese medicine and in Ayurvedic medicine, there are many herbs that are used to treat spermatorrhea. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera).

Ashwagandha is popularly used in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of many conditions. It is also considered as an adaptogen which helps the body react to and handle stress better. The herb is also associated with lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. In men, the effects of Ashwagandha center on improving testicular health as well as increasing fertility.

Kavach Beej (Mucuna pruriens).

Mucuna pruriens is commonly called velvet bean and the plant is medicinally valuable because of its L-Dopa content. L-Dopa is converted by our body into dopamine, which is why L-Dopa is often used in treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. Velvet bean is also used to treat fertility problems. One study showed that intake of a 5-gram extract made from Mucuna pruriens for a duration of three months significantly increased testosterone levels in men suffering from infertility.

Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus).

This plant is related to your regular asparagus vegetable and is native to India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Shatavari is associated with improved immune system and it is used in treatments for its anti-ulcer, antidepressant, and anxiety reduction properties. For sexual health, shatavari is used as an aphrodisiac. Shatavari is associated with increased penile erection and improved sexual behavior. It is often used in combination with other herbs in the formulation of Ayurvedic treatments.

Tu Si Zi or Dodder Seed.

Tu Si Zi is touted to have many health benefits, not only for the sexual health of men. For instance, it is considered to have anti-aging properties and is therefore popularly used as a longevity herb in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicines. It is also called Dodder seed or Semen Cuscutae. Flavonoid extract from semen cuscutae was shown to increase testis weight, as well as the weights of the pituitary gland and the epididymis. After seven days of treatment, Semen cuscutae flavonoid extract was also shown to increase testosterone and luteinizing hormone secretion.

Rou Cong Cong (Cistanches herba).

Also known as desert ginseng, rou cong cong is used not just in China but also in North Africa and Arabic countries. It has many medicinal benefits and is used for its healthy properties including neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties, among many others. In traditional Chinese medicine, one of the many uses of rou cong cong is for the treatment of impotence. Rou cong cong is also often used in combination with other herbs in the formulation of herbal treatments, both in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.

 

You wouldn’t have believed my shock when my college physician told me that my cholesterol was high. By every other metric, I was perfectly healthy, but my cholesterol was through the roof; if I recall correctly, it was 230. I was stunned. My cholesterol shouldn’t be high! Not that I was particularly healthy, just, high cholesterol was something that happened to old guys, not to young, virile kids like me. Well, I was certainly scared straight, and from there, I learned everything I could about fixing my cholesterol, and a few years later, I was back down in a healthier range. But before we talk about methods of lowering cholesterol, it might be a good idea to get a clear idea of what cholesterol is.

What Is Cholesterol?

As with most things that can kill you, cholesterol isn’t actually a bad thing. Everyone’s body makes cholesterol, and it’s a necessary part of the functioning of our cells. It’s a waxy type of fat found within all of the cells, producing hormones and helping to digest the food that gives us energy. In large quantities, though, cholesterol is a killer. That waxy fat can build up inside blood vessels and eventually create plaque, a hard substance that clogs the vessels, which can lead to a heart attack or blood clots.

Difference Types of Cholesterol

You’ve probably heard of “good” and “bad” cholesterol, but don’t know what the difference is between the two. So now that we’ve covered what cholesterol is and why you need to maintain a low amount of it, it’s time to discuss some strategies to keep that cholesterol low. Obviously, these tactics are generally aimed at lowering your LDL in particular, and keep a healthy level of cholesterol overall.

Manage the Fats You Eat

The number one factor when it comes to your cholesterol is the food that you eat, so you need to be sure that you eat the right foods. These changes can make a big difference at any point, whether you’ve had a high cholesterol for years or you just don’t want to develop one. Cholesterol comes from fats, so to make sure that you get the right cholesterol, it’s better to eat the right fats.

You’ll find that all of the fats that come from meats are saturated fats, which means they will add to your LDL. Eat less of those meats, and choose leaner cuts when you do eat meat. You can get a much better type of fats, unsaturated fats, from sources like fish and nuts. The worst type of fat you can eat, trans fats, generally doesn’t come from animals at all. It’s more of a processed food issue, and can be found in tons of foods that come pre-packaged, especially junk food, and is always present in fried food. If you don’t manage anything else, cut out the trans fats from your diet.

Lots of Soluble Fiber

Not only is fiber good for your digestive system and your heart, it’s also been shown to lower your LDL levels, making soluble fiber a multitasker. It’s also a good idea to add whey protein into your diet, as that’s also been known to lower your LDL and your overall cholesterol.

Exercise More

Diet is going to take you a long way in making your cholesterol better, but it won’t fix everything. Creating a good exercise routine is also vital to lowering your cholesterol to healthier levels. Exercising for just a half hour a day will boost your levels of HDL, the good form of cholesterol, and will help you manage your overall cholesterol more effectively. Cardio is the best type of exercise for your heart health, so think about incorporating a jog into your routine, taking breaks throughout your day to do some jumping jacks, or make time to go for a swim after work. It doesn’t really matter what you choose; literally any activity is forward progress, even if it’s just taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

Lose Weight

It does go hand in hand with exercising, and heart healthier foods will generally be healthier for your weight as well, but it’s still important enough to warrant its own category. When you’re obese, your body systems are out of whack with their natural rhythm, and have too much ground to regulate and manage. Part of that is your cholesterol; when looking inside the blood vessels of an obese person, you will always find excess cholesterol.

Quit Smoking

man breaking cigarette quit smokingNo, the tobacco companies didn’t put trans fats in your cigarettes, although I wouldn’t put it past them, no, the very act of smoking keeps your HDL levels lower, and since your HDL keeps LDL in check, that leads to higher cholesterol levels overall. Granted, if you’re smoking cigarettes in the information age, you already know that they’re not good for you and have made your peace with that, but if cholesterol is a new problem in your life and you’re not sure why, look to the pack in your pocket for a possible reason. Consider cholesterol just another reason that you need to quit.

Limited Alcohol Use

In small amounts, alcohol is actually good for your cholesterol. It actually boosts your HDL levels, so alcohol is not something that you need to avoid. However, those benefits have diminishing returns, and large amounts of alcohol consumption come with its own whole host of health troubles.

Since the earliest days of the burgeoning internet, porn has been a lure used by hackers and scammers to trap unwitting (and horny) web users.

Your porn habits are a secret — or at least closely held — thing. So, if while you’re taking some personal time to surreptitiously sneak in some porn on your laptop or smartphone, you get nailed by some malware or ransomware, you’re not very likely to go not he offensive to stop it from happening or report the full extent of the circumstances that led to the infection. If you did that, then you’d have to admit to the, admittedly, banal, but still stigmatized act of looking at porn. If you got a virus — you need to address it. And the best way to handle it and make sure nothing like it happens in the future is to be able to explain the full circumstances of what happened.

Porn is still the most popular lure used to get internet users to fall for hacks and for phishing scams. Macs may not get as many viruses as PCs, but they still get them — and the numbers are growing. Android devices are vulnerable to malicious programs and everyone is susceptible to potential phishing scams.

You go to a website that’s made to look like a mock up of your favorite porn site — Naughty America, Pornhub, Brazzers, Playboy, Hustler — and then you enter your log in user name and password into the boxes and click “OK.” Then the hackers have your info.

Yes, in fact, the most common phishing scam is to steal your porn. They get your credentials and then sell it on the dark web. And even though we’re frequently reminded not to use the same credentials across multiple platforms, humans are inherently laze and we do it anyway. Then, your log in and password for any number of things — your e-mail, your work computer, your bank’s online services — they’re all out there for the selling.  The best way to protect yourself from this kind of hack is to be observant. Make sure you’re not entering your login information into a pop up. Also, make sure you’re entering the name of the website correctly at the top of your browser, and make sure you see all of the right security notifications before you put in anything.

Tell tale clues for any kind of phishing scam are the misspelling of the website name you’re trying to access, and the use of a pop up to collect your credentials.

If you run into that, most likely you’ll have no problems as long as you quickly exit out of the window and that website. Malware and phishing are not passive. You need to take affirmative action for them to harm you, but the sites can be very clever and get you to click on links and download things that you would otherwise avoid. Phishing sites that use porn obviously have a leg up because downloading is a part of the name of the game of enjoying porn on the internet.

Speaking of pop ups that are trying to trick you into clicking on them, they will often try to mimic your virus checker or prompt you to scan your computer for a virus. Then by clicking the link, you get a virus. Or it’ll tell you that you need an update to your flash player to view a video. Then you click on the update — it’s a virus or some malware. Malware can slow down your computer by taking up resources to do things in the background but it can also record keystrokes and send them to people you don’t want them going to. Then your personal information or your credit card numbers can end up in the wrong hands. There are different levels of malicious when it comes to malware. It’s best to avoid it altogether in general.

If the site is claiming that you need an update to view something, such as adobe flash, close out the website, go to the official adobe website and check to see if you have the most recent version. If you do need an update — best to get it from the source while you’re there rather than download it from some third-party site. Just to be safe.

If you get a pop up about a virus being detected or your computer needing a scan, turn to your friendly neighborhood virus scanner: whichever you have on your computer at the time. Those kinds of pop ups are nearly always a scam, but if you want to be overly careful, scan with your own program. It’s usually pretty quick.

There are three basic and easy ways to practice safe pornography on the internet.

You want to stick to the websites you know are safe. Go to the same sites that you trust and patronize them. Going off into the woods with no protection will only end in tears.

While we’re talking about trusted sources, only download programs and applications from trusted sources. If you don’t know the source of a program or its in an attachment in an e-mail from an address you’ve never seen promising loads of porn, don’t open it. You’re setting yourself up for some potentially extreme viruses, malware or, potentially, ransomware — perhaps the worst of them all.

And finally, don’t patronize dark web sources for credentials to porn sites. If you want premium porn content — pay for it.  First, there’s no guarantee that what you pay for will work, let alone for how long it will if it does. Second, you’re incentivizing the continued practice of stealing and selling of porn log ins, leading to more scams using smarter and uglier means.
